Jonathan grew up in Beijing, China, a small stowaway riding on the scales of the mammoth dragon. It was there that his skills were honed under the vigorous tutelage of a professor from the Central Academy of Fine Arts. This 14 year cross cultural experience was massively instrumental in forming his own visual lexicon and continues to affect his use of pictorial language. The subject matter of Jonathan’s art is always changing. He says this is because there is just so much he is curious about that his interests have no boundaries.
Jonathan has been a recipient of the Virginia Commission for the Arts Fellowship Grant, has exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, was invited to do a 6 month residency at TCG Nordica in Kunming, China and was also accepted into the prestigious Birds in Art exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wisconsin among other things. His art is housed in private collections around the world.
“Everything in the universe is immersed in mystery. We see through a veil into something much larger than ourselves, something eternal. It’s the eternality, the beauty of the order, and the mystery that keeps me in a state of wonder and longing. Art is a way I hold onto and ponder mystery.”
